As artificial intelligence continues to reshape global industries, South Africas financial authorities are taking a closer look at how these technologies are influencing investor behavior. The Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) recently issued a statement highlighting the need for increased vigilance in digital financial environments—especially as synthetic content becomes more difficult to detect.
According to the FSCA, content generated using AI—including audio and video resembling well-known personalities—has been circulating across online platforms. Some of this content imitates trusted public figures to create the illusion of endorsement or official backing. This trend raises concerns about how investors perceive legitimacy in a world where visual and vocal cues are no longer reliable indicators.
The regulator urged the public to verify financial services through official FSCA records, especially when approached via unfamiliar websites, social media promotions, or unsolicited messages.
At a recent conference organized by the U.S. Federal Reserve, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed growing risks associated with voice-based AI tools. Altman criticized outdated authentication systems that rely on voice recognition, calling for stronger verification methods as cloned voices become increasingly lifelike.
